Echoes of the Past: A Visit to Elmina Castle
Kofi Mensah
March 10, 2024
Standing before the whitewashed walls of Elmina Castle, it's hard to reconcile the beauty of the Atlantic coast with the dark history contained within these dungeons. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, it is the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa.
Visiting here is a heavy but necessary experience for anyone looking to understand the complex history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and the resilience of those who survived it.
